Featured Song: “I Could Go”

Oberhofer is a young guy from NYC who makes some very upbeat, catchy songs. I haven’t heard all the songs on his upcoming LP yet, but I will be buying it. I can see him becoming very popular soon. Check the sidebar for a link to “I Could Go”.  (hat tip to Pasta Prima)

On another note, I love Miike Snow’s song “The Rabbit”. The video is mesmerizingly strange.

SotW: “Odessa”

* I’m digging “Odessa” from Caribou’s upcoming album Swim. It’s tense and catchy. I just heard about the blog that’s hosting the song, Pasta Primavera, but on first impression it’s a good music blog. The two tracks they feature from Four Tet’s new album are great choices (“Angel Echoes” is also a good track).

* I got Yeasayer’s new album, Odd Blood, a few days ago. The quality is similar to their last album–two great songs, a handful of pretty good songs, and the rest is so-so.

Yeasayer’s Upcoming Album

I rarely look forward to new albums, but I’ve heard two tracks so far from Yeasayer’s 2/9 album “Odd Blood” and they’re excellent.  The songs, “O.N.E.” and “Ambling Alp,” were released early as free downloads.  Pre-released songs are usually the best songs on the album, but I’ll still be downloading the rest of the album on faith when it comes out next week.

I’ve also downloaded a handful of tracks from Rjd2 and Four Tet’s new albums. Very good so far.

Any albums coming up that you are looking forward to?

Hark, The J-Wal Year-End Music Mix Is Here

To commemorate the end of the decade, I made not one but two, TWO, TWOOOOOO music mixes this year:

Click on the links to download.  I’m way too lazy to type out the song and artist titles, and anyway, isn’t it fun to be surprised? If there’s something you love though and want more info about, I’ll provide it.

Technical problems, thoughts? Let me know.

At a Ukelele Concert

I went to an outdoor ukelele concert this evening. One of the singers had a crowd of kids in front of him and was chatting with them between songs.

SINGER: “Do you want me to play a fast song or a slow song?”
KIDS: “FAST!”
SINGER: “How did I know you were going to say that?”
LITTLE BOY: “Cause we’re children!”

Best Music Video I’ve Seen in a While

My Favorite Michael Jackson Song

For me, it’s Smooth Criminal. Twenty years later, it still holds up. Obviously, Thriller and Beat It are great, but I don’t want to highlight what everyone loves already.

I’m surprised that I’m a little wistful that Michael Jackson died. I’m not a fan of celebrity culture or feeling sad when strangers with nothing in common with you pass away, but his death reawoken some old memories I haven’t thought of in a while, like trying to learn how to moonwalk or (and this will seem bizarre to most of you) a sense of joy watching Weird Al Yankovic parody Beat It with Eat it.

Link to Smooth Criminal in the sidebar for a while…

“We Didn’t Start The Flame War”

Funny and clever (video).

OK Go Video

These guys are really likable. This OK Go video has been out for a few years, but I just heard of it today. So maybe you haven’t seen it either.

SotW: “Better Than Sunday”

I’ve been listening a lot to Ladyhawke recently, a New Zealand elecronic-pop band that has a nice updated 80s sound to their music. You can download one of their songs, “Better Than Sunday”, in the Song of the Week sidebar on the right. The whole CD is solid, so I recommend getting it if you like this song.

Songs of the Year for You?

A question for anyone out there who is into music. What songs or albums in 2008 did you find yourself listening to over and over again, even months after you first heard it?

I listen to a lot of music so most of it blurs together and is quickly forgotten, regardless of how much I like it during the first few listens. There’s only six songs + artists that managed to stick with me throughout the year (all on the 2008 mix, of course).  The current Song of the Week is one of them (see SotW on the right).

Pancake City Music Mix, 2008

Every year, every year being 2007 and 2008, I put together a mix of songs that caught my attention during the year.

All of the songs were ones I found in 2008, and most of them were released in 2008 as well. I hope you enjoy it: Pancake City 2008 Music Mix

Update: The file is in the .zip format. Your computer will probably open it automatically. If it doesn’t, you can download a free utility to open .zip files here.

-3 though for the “Expert Review” of Google’s new G1 phone, being as the phone doesn’t come out for a few weeks and the second paragraph of the “Expert Review” is “Granted, I’ve only had a few minutes of hands-on time with the T-Mobile G1, so this doesn’t count as a review—we’re just talking first impressions here.”

Update: Okay, +2 for this one.  “Disgraced former NBA referee reports to federal prison camp” (link)

Zune Software Upgrade: Photo Review

A new version of the Zune Player software was released. Whoopee.

Girl Talk Talk

I almost missed this. Greg Gillis of “Girl Talk” did a chat on the WP’s web site yesterday. He touched in a roundabout way on a question I’ve had for a long time: how does he separate the vocals from the instrumentals in a song so he can remix them?
