We live in an age of forgetting.
announcement
Hey, Google Reader People
Jan 4th
I made several changes to the Avatar post that got sent out on the RSS feed. You should click through and read the version on the site.
Two Things
Jan 3rd
1. Changed the site template. It took hours less than the last time I changed it.
2. This Lord of the Rings sketch came up in the “This Day Past Years” I have in the sidebar. It holds up better than I expected.
NaBloPoMo…The Month After (after a month)
Dec 31st
It’s the end of National Blog Posting Month…The Month After. I started on Dec. 1 and wrote something every day except the 22nd, which I consciously skipped to give myself a break.
It was more fun than I thought. After the first week, I was thinking of more ideas than usual, anything that could potentially be used as a blog post. It’s funny how the brain will automatically allot resources when you decide to focus on a routine task.
The quality and effort was up and down, but I posted more this month than I have since Jan. 2009. I also felt a little more creative than usual, and maybe happier too, but it’s hard to tease the reason for that out.
Have a Happy New Year, eveyone. Anyone making a New Year’s resolution? I like hearing about them, even though I usually don’t make them myself.
Hey, Google Reader People
Jul 3rd
Check out the tweets in the sidebar. I’m about to live-tweet putting on my pants.
My Twitter Page
Jun 28th
I’m trying to get in the habit of posting short thoughts\jokes on Twitter. You can see them here if you are interested. Have any thoughts or advice about Twitter? I’m still new to the service.
New Template
Jan 28th
I figured after updating Wordpress (blogging software), I’d pick a new template too. The previous design is nice but had some coding issues, like not being search-engine friendly, and I didn’t feel like spending dozens of hours to learn how to fix them. There is no perfect template out there (I looked at over 200) but this one is close enough so far.
Is the “Continue Reading” option annoying or OK? There’s a another template I’m considering which has a few more features but will also take more work to tweak. I may give that a shot in a few days.
RSS Feed
Jan 27th
I don’t understand how RSS feeds work. I’m going to move a few directories around as part of the upgrade (including where the RSS file is saved), so you may need to re-enter the site in your RSS reader. Upgrade starting soon…
Wordpress Update
Jan 26th
At some point, probably tonight, I’m going to update my Wordpress installation, which usually results in lots of things breaking and my site being down for a day.
Pancake City Music Mix, 2008
Jan 7th
Every year, every year being 2007 and 2008, I put together a mix of songs that caught my attention during the year.
All of the songs were ones I found in 2008, and most of them were released in 2008 as well. I hope you enjoy it: Pancake City 2008 Music Mix
Update: The file is in the .zip format. Your computer will probably open it automatically. If it doesn’t, you can download a free utility to open .zip files here.
Free Starbucks Coffee on Nov 4th
Nov 2nd
After you wait in line 2 hours to vote on Nov. 4th, you can wait another hour in line for a free cup of Starbucks coffee. I would prefer to have the coffee while waiting in line to vote. If Starbucks is really committed to democracy, they should put their coffee in a van and drive it to polling places. If they could pick me up along the way, that would be helpful to democracy too.
A list of other free election day stuff here. To save you time, here is a summary: doughnuts and ice-cream.
Be fat. Vote.
Seriously, do you know anyone in a swing state that is flaky about voting? We need to get them to the polls. Promise them you’ll buy them a cup of coffee if they vote. If they find out it was free and complain that you mislead them, tell them “Welcome to the world of politics.” Then promise to make it up by buying them a doughnut and ice-cream.
Last, this video personalization technology is well done.
Big Announcement
Sep 25th
I have an announcement. Effective immediately, I am suspending all new posts on Pancake City.
What happened is that two weeks ago, a pipe broke and started flooding my basement. I was going to call a plumber, but I was very busy writing posts and promoting my blog at the time. Also, I had just bought a kayak, and thought this would be a good opportunity to try it out.
I did not anticipate the rate of water flow though, and eventually the water reached my roommate’s bedroom by the stairway, carrying his cat out the window. Don’t worry, the cat is fine, albiet very wet and confused.
My roommate called a few plumbers last week, and after days of long, hard work, they are 95% done fixing the pipe and draining the basement. That is why I cannot write another word, excluding these words, and the words after this, until they finish the last 5%.
Although I know nothing about plumbing, sanitation systems, or where water even comes from, my ability to hover around plumbers and make useful suggestions like “Are you sure that’s tight?” and “Really, are you sure?” will guarantee they will finish the job without taking any frivolous lunch breaks.
I am also suspending all Google ads promoting my site. In a time like this, how can I continue to promote myself when our entire house is at risk? Yet I know many of you will be concerned about the plumbing progress. That is why I will be holding press conferences at 10:00, 2:00, and 5:00 every day until this crisis has been averted.
I call on my competitor, FlapjackCountry.com, to follow my lead and also stop posting on his blog. I will also not compare Google Analytics stats with him this Friday as planned. In a time like this, does it really matter who has the better keywords or more attractrive design?
I am happy to have that comparison next Friday, although at a cost. That is the same date we were planning on comparing our affiliate sites, ForeignPolicyMonthy.com and ICanHazCheezBurger.com.
That is truly unfortunate.
Happy Birthday, Michele!
Jul 24th
My sister is in Hong Kong, celebrating her birthday 12 hours early (from my perspective).
More Cake
May 9th
I rewrote the Cake II sketch that some of you commented on. It’s not too different, but I hope it’s a little funnier. I may have made it too weird, but I don’t think I’ll have time to change it before the class on Friday night.
Cute Cat for Adoption
Apr 27th
Michele and Evan are moving to Hong Kong in a month, and can’t take their cat, George. He’s friendly, house-trained, and very playful. This is the feline in action. If you live in NYC or DC and want to give this cute cat a warm home, let me know.
